Professional Equine & Canine Osteopathy – Over 20 Years of Clinical Experience
Helping horses and dogs move comfortably and perform at their best with experienced, professional osteopathic care.
Equine Osteopathy
Equine osteopathy uses hands-on assessment and treatment techniques to help maintain your horse’s mobility, comfort and physical function. At 4Leg Osteopathy, we assess the whole horse rather than focusing solely on the area where a problem appears to be.
Horses may benefit from assessment when you notice changes such as stiffness, altered gait, difficulty bending on one rein, changes in performance, problems with head carriage, sensitivity when grooming or saddling, or changes in behaviour such as bucking or reluctance to jump.
Treatment is individually tailored and may include soft-tissue techniques, stretching, joint mobilisation and other appropriate osteopathic techniques.
Based in Stanford-le-Hope, 4Leg Osteopathy provides equine osteopathy across Essex, including Thurrock, Basildon, Brentwood, Billericay, Chelmsford, Southend and surrounding areas.
Canine Osteopathy
Canine osteopathy uses gentle, hands-on assessment and treatment techniques to help support your dog’s mobility, comfort and physical function. At 4Leg Osteopathy, we look at the whole dog, considering how the joints, muscles and surrounding tissues work together rather than simply focusing on one area.
An osteopathic assessment may be helpful if you notice changes such as stiffness, difficulty getting up or lying down, reluctance to jump or use stairs, changes in walking or running, reduced performance, muscle tightness or changes in normal behaviour.
Treatment is individually tailored to your dog and may include soft-tissue techniques, stretching, joint mobilisation and other appropriate osteopathic techniques. Osteopathy can also form part of a wider management or rehabilitation programme alongside veterinary care when appropriate.

Benefits of Regular Osteopathic Treatment
Regular osteopathic check-ups can help support the ongoing mobility, comfort and physical wellbeing of both horses and dogs. Animals cannot always tell us when something feels different, and subtle changes in movement or performance can sometimes develop before an obvious problem is noticed.
Regular assessment may help to:
-
Identify changes in mobility, muscle tension or movement patterns
-
Maintain joint mobility and flexibility
-
Support comfortable, efficient movement
-
Monitor older animals for changes in physical function
-
Support rehabilitation and return to normal activity alongside veterinary care
-
Help working, sporting and competition animals maintain their physical performance
For horses, regular assessment can be particularly useful when training, competing or returning to work. For dogs, it may be beneficial for active and sporting dogs as well as older dogs whose mobility needs can change over time.
At 4Leg Osteopathy, treatment and the frequency of appointments are always tailored to the individual animal—regular treatment should be based on need rather than a one-size-fits-all schedule.
What is Animal Osteopathy?
Animal osteopathy is pretty much the same as human osteopathy, where the osteopath helps to restore structural and physiological harmony in the tissues and joints.
What can an Animal Osteopath help with?
A lot of people consider osteopaths as treating just bad backs but it can also help in improving any of the following:
- Stiffness in different areas of the body i.e. shoulders or hips etc
- Stiffness in older animals
- Gait issues
- Problems with head carriage
- Muscle imbalance and spasms
- Uneven muscle bulk
Some problems may not present as obvious physical issues but say with horses it can manifest as:
- Changes in behaviour: bucking, bolting, rearing, kicking, and refusing to jump
- Difficulties or issues with saddling, unable to stand still or relax
- Hyper-sensitivity to clipping, brushing or difficulty shoeing
With dogs it can be similar in regards:
- Changes in behaviour
- Reduced performance, especially with Greyhounds
- General sensitivity
Treatment can not only help with the above but also assist with:
- Rehabilitation after injury
- Rehabilitation and support with
- Conditions such as arthritis
